Author of similar books about country, jazz, and blues music, Dicaire has assembled 50 short biographies of important figures in the development of folk music. While the profiles are useful and well written, the author's definition of folk music is somewhat vague and his selections for inclusion are idiosyncratic: Where are A.P. and Maybelle Carter, Malvina Reynolds, and J. Scott Skinner, for example? These criticisms aside, this book will be welcomed by readers who are new to folk music, and it is a worthy addition to any collection of music reference books.
