This resource for teachers begins with background on the reciprocal development of early writing and reading, a discussion of basics for creating the writing/reading-connected classroom, and advice on teaching a writing/reading workshop. The book then reviews four types of mini-lessons that support writing and reading: operational, print awareness, foundational, and craft mini-lessons. The next four chapters collect 14 of each of the four types of lessons, such as talking with a partner, saying words slowly to listen for sounds, describing people using feeling words, and writing how-to stories. The book includes correlation charts between the mini-lessons and the Common Core State Standards, plus a list of literature that supports a writing/reading connection.
