Although a connection between inflammation and cancer was first proposed by German physicist and pathologist Rudolph L.C. Virchow way back in 1863, it was not until the past 10 years, with increasing knowledge of the inflammatory micro-environment, that the connection came under serious investigation. In this volume, the editors (all of the U. of Witten, Germany) present 13 papers discussing recent research findings in this interdisciplinary topic. The papers are organized into sections dealing with general aspects; specific pathogens; infection, inflammation, and neoplasia; chemokine metastasias; and future outlooks. Specific topics include adult stem cell theory of the multi-stage, multi-mechanism theory of carcinogenisis; schistosomiasis and neoplasia; co-opting macrophage traits in cancer progression; involvement of chemokine receptors in organ-specific metastasis; and options for visualizing metastatic disease in the living body.
