The work of eminent philosopher and historian of science, Michael Friedman (humanities, Stanford U.), is at the heart of this volume. With the themes of Friedman's 30 years of scholarship used as a springboard for further investigation, 25 contributions are grouped in sections on the Newtonian era, Kant, logical positivism and neo-Kantianism, the history and philosophy of physics, and post-Kuhnian philosophy of science. The final, 26th essay, is by Friedman himself, whose reconsideration and response occupies about 200 pages, or one-quarter of the entire book. Editors Domski (philosophy, U. of New Mexico) and Dickson (philosophy, U. of South Carolina provide a substantial introduction to the volume. The contributors are academics in philosophy and science history, all but a few based in the US. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
