Every computer or device that accesses the Internet uses the Internet Protocol (IP) to communicate. This book discusses the latest version of IP, version 6 or IPv6. While the IPv6 specifications have existed for more than a decade, deployment has been lackluster. However, with the announcement in 2011 that the current IP version, IPv4, has nearly run out, interest in IPv6 has grown substantially. This is due to the fact that new Internet users will by necessity have to use IPv6 addresses. This will change the Internet over time from a homogeneous IPv4 network to a mixed IPv4-IPv6 Internet. To communicate ubiquitously on the Internet, organizations will need to support both protocols of the mixed IPv4-IPv6 Internet. This book features a guest introduction from Vint Cerf.
