The conjugate nature has always been an inherent feature of any heat transfer problem, says Dorfman (U. of Michigan-Ann Arbor), but it was only with the advent of computers that it could be investigated systematically. A specialist in fluid mechanics and heat transfer and a pioneer in research into the problem, he intended this book to be a kind of technical memoir of his work and the early development of the field since 1965, but found that he had to incorporate so much current material that the history is relegated to the first two chapters. After that, he focuses on modern theory and methods for heat transfer from arbitrary non-isothermal surfaces in laminar and turbulent flows, general properties of non-isothermal and conjugate heat transfer, and analytical and numerical methods for solving conjugate convention heat transfer problems. A final section surveys applications in the thermal treatment of materials, technological processes, and operating manufacturing equipment.
