Dorn (reading education, U. of Arkansas at Little Rock) and Soffos, a literacy specialist, discuss reading comprehension and ways for teachers to develop it in their students. They explain cognitive and social aspects of comprehension, viewing it as an active process; connect language to literacy; describe ten strategic behaviors for reading and language, including classroom examples and mini-lessons; and note that literature discussion groups are a method for talking about books. An 85-minute DVD is provided, which correlates to the chapters and shows examples of shared reading, author studies, mini-lessons, one-to-one conferences, an adult book discussion, and teacher book clubs. Appendices contain reproducible shared reading aids, professional development activities, book lists, genre descriptions and questions, and rubrics for assessment. Both authors have teaching experience in the primary and intermediate grades and have written other books on reading and writing. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
