Doyle (aeronautics and astronautics, Purdue U.) describes a method by which novice engineers can solve unfamiliar problems with a finite element computer simulation program and only a modicum of background. Using a simulation program called QED, which is introduced in the book, for the purposes of illustration, he lays out a strategy by which the engineer follows these steps: establish a basic knowledge base by duplicating a textbook example for the theory, perform a parameter sensitivity study, start with a known solution to a different problem and slowly morph the problem to the one of interest, start with the given complex problem and remove features so as to identify those features that do and do not affect essential behaviors, identify and model separate features of the problem and then construct a compound model, and construct a simple analytical model that contains the essential features of the problem. The CD-ROM contains a copy of QED. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
