The Academic Society for Competition Law (ASCOLA) held its second conference during December 2006 in Paris, focusing on the role of economic theory in making competition law in the European Union and elsewhere. The 17 papers that emerged into print cover a comparative perspective on the goals of competition law, the status of efficiency analysis in competition law, and economic analysis and competition law in practice. In a guest speech, Bruno Lasserre, president of the Conseil de la concurrence (French Competition Council) discusses efficiency in that body's enforcement policy. Other topics include the efficiency of competition law in economics of transition, a lawyer's view that competition law should promote economic and social welfare by ensuring the freedom to compete, and foundational issues in the convergence of competition law prohibitions.
