Rather than studying queer girls as a distinct sexual minority, Driver (social sciences, York U., Toronto) frames "queer" in relationship to coming-of-age identification with diverse gender identities as mediated through popular culture representations. A central theme is the bilateral influences between marginalized youth subcultures and alternative and mainstream pop culture. Self-representations obtained through e-mails, interviews, and focus groups include "homoflexible" and "I'm a girl. I don't attempt to categorize myself any further." A character in Buffy the Vampire Slayer is analyzed. The volume includes queer girl-oriented movie and TV stills and magazine covers. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
