Drout (English, Wheaton College, Mass.) is a master synthesizer, analyzing English Benedictine reform of the tenth century by way of memetic theory. He shows how Anglo-Saxon monks, grounded in the Rule of St. Benedict and The Regularis Concordia developed a reform culture, compares this to the tradition of reform through wills and the inheritance of tradition, and shows how repetition and pattern recognition led to the evolution of traditions and style. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, he then takes on the Enlarged Rule of Chrodegang and the Wisdom poems of the Exeter Book to create a major study of the vocabulary developed through both. The new methodological tools Drout develops are invaluable for scholars of evolutionary theory in new applications. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
