Commenting on the inclusion of the latter topics, the author states the following in his introduction: "With the increasing importance of financial engineering, mathematical biology and risk analysis, the reliance on conventional engineering mathematics is inadequate and we have broken with most engineering mathematics textbooks by including material on probabilistic methods in engineering. This material leads directly to random processes which are used to study random fluctuations such as noise." The text accommodates two general tracks: the differential equations course, and the engineering mathematics course. Duffy's career included 25 years with NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center (until 2005), and he taught for many years at the US Naval Academy and the US Military Academy.
