Duke (medical botany, Tai Sophia Institute) presents a work that has evolved from his earlier Father Nature's Farmacy, still in the public domain and online at the US Department of Agriculture, through the Handbook of Medicinal Herbs (CRC), and on to this work. He catalogues some 500 of the more important Latin American medicinal plants, from Abuta grandifolia (motelo sanango) to Ziziphus joazeiro (jua). For each plant, he first gives common name and scientific name, indicates the work in which it was first described, indicates its safety (subjectively in relation to coffee), names taxonomic family, lists illustrations from other sources, describes outdated synonyms, provides notes on select points of interest or information, and lists other common names. He then describes the activities reported for the plant and attaches a subjective score as to efficacy, from an "f" for folklore to a rare "3" for clinically proven in humans. He also describes indications, also scoring the efficacy of indications by the same system. New to this volume, he includes a section in which he assesses the food "farmacy" potential of the plant using another subjective scoring system. Finally, he reports contraindications, interactions, and side effects and also includes news on chemicals or extracts of the plant that have proven effects.
