The Achaemenid empire, (ca. 550-330 B.C.) was the first world empire, founded by Cyrus II in southwest Iran and lower Mesopotamia. Previously, most of the information on the area was drawn from classical Greek writers, but current scholars are increasingly focusing on the Persian state itself. The population of the Empire came from many different backgrounds and cultures, and a number of languages were spoken. The challenge was to construct a flexible system that would provide for all groups and their needs. The book focuses on Sardis, a regional capital in western Anatolia, and documents how the Achaemenid administration worked to ensure successful annexation of the region and its populace into the Persian Empire. As well as successfully bringing together the current information on the Achaemenid, this book is also an excellent contribution to empire studies.
