Although Africa has enjoyed high growth rates in recent years (the overall real gross domestic product growth rate was 5.7 percent in 2006) it is clear that much of that growth comes from the export of commodities such as crude oil, metals and minerals and that growth falls short of the Millennium Development Goal. The nations of this continent therefore should expect to accelerate growth while also sustaining momentum and ensuring some measure of stability. This report asserts the only way to achieve these seemingly contradictory goals is to diversify their products and export base. It covers developments in the world economy and the implications for Africa, recent economic performance and prospects for 2007 figures, global development challenges for Africa experienced in 2006. The second section reports on diversification trends in Africa, their possible relationship with growth, and strategies for achieving further diversification that is sustainable.
