Psychoanalysis, the philosophical hermeneutics of Martin Heidegger and Hans-Georg Gadamer, and structuralism developed powerful models of dialogic interpretation, "a shuttling back and forth between terms that produces meaning in its movement rather than finding meaning already there," according to Egginton (Romance languages and literatures, Johns Hopkins U.). He defends this concept of dialogic interpretation against its poststructuralist and posthermeneutic detractors by tracing the development of the canon of psychoanalytic thought and arguing that critiques of psychoanalysis must themselves be seen as interpretations which do not negate psychoanalytic interpretation, but merely spur its change and growth. In making this argument, he engages with the writings of Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Jacques Derrida, and Martin Heidegger, as well as the works of such Latin American fiction writers as Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriel García Márquez, and Augusto Roa Bastos.
