Although volume 1 begins with maps of early immigration from Eastern Europe to the US and countries where Jews were murdered during the Holocaust, Ehrich (Jewish thought, language, and civilization, Shandong U., Jinan, China) introduces this ambitious work by noting that, in order to avoid duplication with similar references, the emphasis is on Asian communities and other less- known aspects of the Jewish Diaspora over that of the better- known European experiences. Volume 1 covers basic themes including the history of, religion, women, and genealogy in the Diaspora, and Sephardi, Oriental, and Ashkenazi cultures. Volume 2 treats communities in Africa, Australasia, North America, Latin America and the Carribean, and the Middle East. Among the regions discussed in volume 3 are the Baltic States and Asian countries. Volumes are individually indexed; lightly illustrated; and include selected bibliographies for entries; and a glossary of Diaspora concepts, themes, names, places, people, and organizations.
