It was the 1960s, and what she had done was unthinkable. She was taken to a home for unwed mothers, where she spent time with other miscreants wondering if they could become virgins again. She only had a few moments with her daughter, and was even a bit jealous when another girl's baby proved to have birth defects so the girl got to take him home. Ellerby's memories of those ghastly times are still fresh, and although her hunt for her daughter was successful, what really matters here is Ellerby's description of the hateful end of mid-century white middle class American culture. Ellerby and her daughter were eventually reunited, but in this account of 35 years between their meetings Ellerby gives readers plenty of reasons why the abuse she suffered caused her to name her baby "Sorrow."
