Emerson was well aware that without the framework of interaction set by society, with all its noise and complication, solitude, which he loved, could be hurtful to that society as well as meaningless. Although he encouraged the pursuit of solitude, he understood the dangers of it to include isolation from the common good, fanaticism, unhealthy self-interest, and elitism. On the other hand, he believed excessive participation in society developed shallowness. Callaway (formerly philosophy, U. of Obadan, etc.) examines these themes with a full range of commentary and extensive notes, giving Emerson's text its philosophical and historical contexts. As Callaway works through the chapters he also considers what such topics as art, domestic life, work, literature, social organizations, courage, success and old age mean now as well as when Emerson wrote of them.
