There had been 20 Congresses at the time of writing; the Committee was founded in 1926 and currently comprises historians' associations or committees from 54 countries and 28 thematically specialized affiliated commissions. On this framework, Erdmann built his history of transnational, increasingly global, approaches to the study of history in the 20th century. His Ökumene der Historiker was published in 1987, and is here translated, updated, and edited for an international audience by German historians. It describes topics, highlights, and controversies of the Congresses; changing themes, viewpoints, and methods in the field; and the degree to which the central controversies and problems of the time influenced the work of historians.
