This text offers an introduction to the use of qualitative methods in business, framed by background on research design, varieties of data types, and the writing process as key components of any successful research project. Part I provides an overview of the qualitative research process, with material on research ethics, collecting qualitative data, and electronic research. Part II introduces nine different qualitative research approaches that can be used in business research, and demonstrates them with case studies. Some of the approaches covered have a well-established theoretical background, such as critical, feminist, and ethnographic research; others, such as case study and focus group research, do not. For each of the nine approaches, the authors illustrate where the approach leads in terms of research questions, research design, data collection and analysis, and reporting. Part III, consisting of two final chapters, covers writing and evaluating qualitative business research. Chapter objectives, exercises, key concept summaries, bold terms, and a glossary are included. The book can be used as a core text for a graduate course in qualitative business research. It can also be used as supplemental reading for MBA and introductory doctoral courses.
