Based on the conviction that only translators who write poetry themselves can properly re-create the celebrated and timeless tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, the Greek Tragedy in New Translations series offers specially commissioned translations that go beyond the literal meaning of the Greek in order to evoke the poetry of the originals. The translations in this series are the result of collaborations between outstanding poets and prominent scholars. Each is provided with full stage directions and accompanied by an informative introduction, extensive commentary, and a glossary of mythical and geographical references.

Collected here for the first time in these critically acclaimed verse translations are four tragedies by Euripides including a new, never before published translation of Helen by Peter Burian:

Peter Burian is Professor of Classical and Comparative Literatures, and Theater Studies at Duke University.

Alan Shapiro is Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

William Arrowsmith founded the Greek Tragedy in New Translations series and was its first General Editor; Herbert Golder also served as General Editor.
