Rather than focusing on theoretical and clinical issues, this practical manual of feminist therapy for students and practitioners discusses specific techniques used in feminist therapy and illustrates them with case studies and vignettes, exercises, and discussion questions. The book explores what it means to be a feminist therapist, as opposed to a therapist who uses feminist techniques or gender-fair practices. Early chapters cover theory, history, basic tenets of feminist therapy, and gender-role theory and research. The book then discuses diagnostic issues with reference to gender, racial bias, and power, and places statistics on women and psychological illness into societal perspective with regard to gender roles. Later chapters cover maintaining egalitarian relationships, social action and client empowerment, and ideas for integrating feminist therapy with other therapeutic models. Evans is program coordinator of the Counselor Education Program at the University of South Carolina. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
