They had never seen such a place before. Brilliant birds circled over their heads. The very trees seemed to come from the first days of creation. To the Jesuit missionaries, the Orinoco River (which crosses what is now Colombia and Venezuela) was a source of wonder. Here Ewalt (Spanish, Wake Forest U.) explains how the missionaries applied that wonder to the development of the Catholic Enlightenment. She expands traditional conceptions of the Enlightenment by examining the century's production of knowledge that served both intellectual and religious functions. Specifically, Ewalt uses classical and sacred rhetorical techniques to describe the spiritual and scientific discourse of Gumilla's El Orinoco Ilustrado, explaining its influence on the Catholic Enlightenment as a source uniting sentiment and reason that allows for emotion within scientific inquiry and accepts the sense of wonder as a part of the dissemination of information.
