This is a history of American cultural diplomacy in the first decades of the Cold War. Falk (history, Christopher Newport U.) turns his eyes away from exclusive focus on the state in order to focus on the role of dissident cultural producers and private citizens such as Dalton Trumbo and Lillian Hellman in helping to shape the production of American cultural diplomacy programs in film, television, theater, and other public exhibitions. He seeks to demonstrate the contention and volatility involved in forming cultural diplomacy during the early Cold War, the breadth of activities and issues that informed and influenced this process of cultural diplomacy formation, and the importance of foreign audiences in helping to determine the eventual choices of the state regarding cultural diplomacy.
