Figueroa (Latin American and Caribbean literatures, Wayne State U.) examines how three major 20th century Caribbean poets have countered the region's legacy of racism and colonialism. The author focuses on one major work each by poets Luis Palés Matos, Aimé Césaire, and Derek Wolcott and illustrates how they engage the issues through alternating open dialogues of political engagement and lyric expression. He also discusses the often contradictory imperatives guiding the poets and the difficulties they encounter as they attempt to find a voice in post-colonial society. The book is distributed by Associated University Presses. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
