A renowned medallist and sculptor, this first comprehensive book on Leonda Finke's work explores her life-size bronzes through the probing and sensitive detail photographs of photographer David Finn.
Finke's sculptures, primarily of women, are both calm and tortured; heroic and sympathetic. Their roughly textured surfaces give them power beyond their solitary poses, as they stand, sit, recline, crouch and twist, all the while seemingly immersed in their own thoughts. Even her most static figures are brought to life by the Finke's skillful understanding of the intricacies of subtle movement in the human body.
Although often in contorted positions, Finke's women do not suffer physical pain, but rather evoke basic emotions: fear, sorrow, anger, joy, yearning. Says Finke of her figures, "I never ask a model to take a pose I haven't taken first" but then she will change it to add the tension that animates the figures and their gestures.
Leonda Finke documents not only the artist's individual figures and groups, but introduces us to her innovative medals, including a series she created entitled "Medals of Dishonor Worldwide," her portraits and her drawings.
