This primer for firefighters, police officers, property protection specialists, and other first responders shows how to recognize and identify hazardous materials and use common sense in handling a hazardous materials incident. Early chapters cover various theories of fire and types of compounds that make up hazardous materials. The book then turns to the study of individual classes of hazardous materials. This third edition contains a new chapter on chemical warfare agents. The book contains a few b&w illustrations and a 35-page glossary. About 35 pages of appendices provide information on chemical structures of monomers and polymers, hazardous chemicals forbidden to be carried by common carriers, and various standards and codes. There is also a 65-page section of explained answers to chapter questions. Fire has taught the chemistry of hazardous materials to firefighters and other emergency responders. He has written numerous articles for Fire Engineering Magazine, and is author of a dictionary for first responders. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
