In this reprint from 2005, the authors argue that sexuality is often affected by upbringing and that unresolved emotional pain brings about psychological defenses that interfere with healthy sex. Viewing sex as a type of intimate communication, they describe, for clinicians, the development issues that affect a child's sexual identity, problems people have in establishing intimacy, what a healthy sexual relationship is, aspects involved in developing oneself and choosing a mate, and voice therapy as treatment for sexual problems and conflicts. Case studies are used for illustration. The book does not focus on sexual performance. Robert and Lisa Firestone are clinical psychologists, and Catlett is an author and lecturer in continuing education and has produced educational videos on couples and sexuality.
