For those who know who Dr. George is, this book will be welcome; those who do not may be a little confused. George Fischbeck had the mysterious but undeniable appeal of teachers who love teaching and people crazy about a subject who are happily unafraid to be nerds about it. He happened to be at the right place at the right time to change television. First he was a pioneering TV science educator in New Mexico (he is estimated to have taught science to a third of the state's population). He became so popular that a rival station sent demo tapes of him to large cities, hoping he'd be hired away. The gambit worked, and he went to Los Angeles, where he became the prototypical TV weatherman. The book is ghostwritten with Randy Roach, an LA television writer and producer with five Emmy awards. Both Roach and Fischbeck are too close to the subject to find the central thread that would make this odd story a riveting one for readers ignorant of the man himself. For those who know and love George Fischbeck, the book will be an enjoyable memory-lane ride. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
