Thirteen academics and independent scholars from the U.S. and Canada contribute 14 chapters exploring the history of the people of Japanese descent in the Pacific Northwest. The essays explore varied modes of Nikkei resistance and agency while operating within the constraints of oppressive legalized racism and discrimination, and their use of self- conscious strategies to achieve permanent settlement and full participation in the U.S. and Canada. The first major history collection that consciously studies a Nikkei region outside California, it is hoped that the text will initiate a discussion of parallels, intersections, and divergences in 20th-century Nikkei history in the entire Pacific Northwest including British Columbia, and that it will encourage similar comparative studies of other regional Nikkei communities elsewhere.
