According to the editors (both of professors of communications at DePaul U.), a central dilemma of the public relations profession is that they are simultaneously obligated to serve the special interests of their clients and the public interest. Unsurprisingly, a host of ethical issues arise from this dilemma. The ten papers contained here were chosen to illustrate the range and depth of theoretic and practical concerns related to these issues and the practice of public relations as "responsible advocacy." Topics include ethical management of relationships between organizations and activist groups, opportunities and challenges for responsible advocates in the nonprofit sphere resulting from the advent of electronic communication and the economic decline of American journalism, ethical issues that must be addressed when responding to legal and other crises, and the ethics of risk communication.
