Fleisher and Ziegler, retired educators with experience teaching gifted elementary students, provide 12 simple engineering problems to be solved by student teams in grades 4-8, along with exercises to introduce students to the team concept and different team roles. Ten warm-up team projects can be completed with little advance preparation, unlike the 12 engineering challenges, which must be completed by teams over an extended period of time. Each challenge includes detailed instructions, a b&w photo, hints for teachers and coaches, scoring rubrics, a list of references to help students get started, and a checklist for administrating a competition. The challenges are indeed challenging, requiring students to create original, working musical instruments, or a catapult, for example. There is no subject index.
