This critical edition of the works of Robert Grosseteste is Volume 24 in Papers in Medieval Studies from the Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies. Part one offers critical essays on Grosseteste as a theologian and a philosopher. Part two offers essays on his intellectual context: Ptolemy and Christian knowledge; Adam's rib as a test case for natural philosophy in Grosseteste, Fishacre, Rufus, and Kilwardby; Adam of Exeter's Physics of Light. Part three offers texts and translations. Cecelia Panti gives a critical edition of De luce (in Latin with Latin notes); Neil Lewis translates the same text into English; Meridel Holland gives an edition and English translation of Grosseteste's translation of John of Damascus' Dialogue of the Christian and the Saracen; Michael W. Dunne gives an edition and English translation of Sermon 86 on the Ten Commandments. Part four is a final essay which documents Grosseteste as an important and oft-cited figure, particularly in England, all the way through the seventeenth century, and strongly suggests that he was not forgotten, merely recategorized. This is a well-produced full scholarly edition, with footnotes, a bibliography of manuscripts, print primary sources, secondary sources, and an index. Specialized medieval scholars will find it a valuable book. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
