The ten models offered here allow teachers to work together to integrate ideas, themes, and skills from various content areas into a coherent curriculum, with the goal of creating brain-compatible, learner-centered classrooms and better preparing students for lifelong learning. The theory behind the models is first explained, drawing on findings from brain-based learning research. The ten models are then described. For example, the Cellular Model involves focusing on core concepts, while the Shared Model identifies overarching themes connecting aspects of many lessons. The Webbed Model relies on in-depth exploration of a book, an era, or an artist. Discussion of each model includes an overview of its advantages and disadvantages, examples of curricular integration, and guidelines for when and how to implement the model in the classroom. Vignettes in script format dramatize typical staff reactions, and can be used for a readers' theater activity. Classroom reproducibles and graphics for designing lessons and units using each model are also included. An appendix gives rubrics for assessing curriculum integration. Forgarty received her doctorate in curriculum and human resource development from Loyola University of Chicago. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
