Fogel (history, York U., Canada) presents an extended essay in historiography pivoting on what has come to be called The Gold Seal, which was presented by Emperor Guangwu, the founder of the Later Han dynasty, to an emissary from what is now Japan in the year 57 CE, and was discovered in Kyushu in 1784.
