Mountain farming is small scale farming, run by families, and generally low external input – an important trait of green agriculture. It depends on healthy ecosystems. Mountain farmers are crucial for global agrobiodiversity (genetic resources). However, this low external input is not voluntary, but by circumstances (access; topography; lack of capital). A high percentage of mountain people are prone to food insecurity and undernourishment and are poor. Most mountain families depend on farming, forestry and fishing – essentially subsistence farming, including marketing of surplus.
