This three-volume set is presented by editor Forest (political science and terrorism studies, US Military Academy at West Point) as an effort to provide a "centralized and authoritative information source" on how and why a terrorist becomes a terrorist. The first volume looks at recruitment, discussing practicalities and then social and psychological dimensions including the social welfare programs of Hamas in Palestine, women who join the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), and the role of retribution, among other topics. The volume's remaining papers discuss ideological dimensions, mostly in reference to Islamic fundamentalists, but also touching on revolutionary movements and Christian fundamentalists. Training is the topic of the second volume. Six papers examine issues such as selective moral disengagement, cults and charismatic groups, and information and technology in training. Eleven case studies report on the training methods of the Provisional Irish Republican Army, the Uzbekistan Mujahideen, al Qaeda, the Mujahideen of Bosnia, Jemaah Islamiyah, Christian militias, Hizballah in Lebanon, the FARC, and Aum Shinrikyo. The third and final volume discusses root causes and consists of three sections on political dimensions, religious and socioeconomic dimensions, and alternative views. These papers include examinations of superpower foreign policies, American public diplomacy, US support for Israel, political repression in the Muslim world, oil politics, demographics, the drug trade, negative impacts of export economics, religion, state terrorism, environment and geography, and other topics. Each volume contains its own separate bibliography and index. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
