Forsgren (business studies, Uppsala U., Sweden) presents six different perspectives/theories of the multinational firm that have dominated the research in international business over the past 40 years. The first three perspectives are rooted in economic theory: the Dominating multinational examines economist Stephen Hymer's foreign direct investment theory; the Coordinating multinational explores the coordination of transactions between independent firms across borders; the Knowing multinational, from the resource-based or knowledge-based view of the firm, investigates creation of firm-unique values. Inspired by organization theory, the remaining three perspectives focus on the structure and control systems of multinational firms; business network theory and specific relationships between the actors; and the multinational firm as a political rather than business actor. Forsgren concludes with comparisons of the six approaches and some critical dimensions. For undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA-level students in international business courses, and Ph.D. students.
