The Raute people of western Nepal, who call themselves "kings of the forest," are a society of nomadic hunter-gatherers who subsist on langur and macaque monkeys, wild yams, and rice traded from local farmers. In this work, Fortier (U. of California at San Diego) explores how the Raute people have maintained their cultural resilience in the face of immense pressures to settle in villages. She examines Raute self-perceptions of cultural resilience and seeks to understand the choices that promote resilience. She also compares the Raute's cultural resilience to the nearby Raji and Banraji peoples, both of whom are now settled in villages. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
