Philadelphian Benjamin Rush had fought for a republicanism that placed care for the community as the highest value. Unfortunately, argues Foster (history, Marquette U.), by the end of his life he witnessed the death of that ideal, replaced by a watered down republicanism emphasizing individual entrepreneurship over community-mindedness. For Foster, the struggle to define republican ideologies in the period following the American Revolution was largely based in the different material interests of artisans, laborers, freemen (former slaves), and the "middling sort." It was the selfish individualism of this last group that won out, he contends, building a hybrid form of republicanism as they constructed their own class identity.
