Foster (English education and literacy, University of Akron) and Nosol (English, Leesville Road High School, Raleigh, North Carolina) reject stereotypes of urban students and impoverished schools, and focus on new ways to reach out to teens in the English/language arts classroom. They draw on a ten-year project that brought future English teachers to Galway High School, an impoverished urban high school, to teach an advanced English curriculum focused on the writing process, the reading workshop, and Shakespeare. Megan, one of the future English teachers involved in the project, offers her perspective in every chapter. The authors offer core principals for teaching, detailed guidelines for creating lessons and structuring the curriculum, activities to use in the classroom, and examples of worksheets and handouts. Techniques are illustrated by narrative examples of the authors' experiences at Galway. Real-life b&w classroom photos and examples of students' written work are included.
