Written in Spain in 1630, the play The Physician of His Honor has always been controversial. There has never been disagreement, however, about the brilliance of the playwright. Calderón was a master of the comedia, a style of three-act play written in verse during Spain's Golden Age, the 16th and 17th centuries. An introduction to the play discusses its structure and characters, its metaphors, its historical contexts and responses, and staging and setting. The introduction also examines problems in translating and editing the play. The play's side-by-side Spanish and English presentation will be useful to Spanish-language instructors wishing to discuss linguistic points. B&w photos for performances are included. In this second edition, the translation has undergone extensive revision. Translator Fox teaches Hispanic studies at Brandeis University. The book is distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
