Though the classic Medieval commentaries on the Hebrew Bible emerged from the Ashekanic and Sefardic intellectual traditions, and except the Aramaic targumim are all in rabbinic Hebrew, Frank (near eastern languages and cultures, Ohio State U.) says that Jewish Bible commentary was born in the Islamic east not the Christian west, as Jewish scholars writing in Arabic in Iraq and Palestine developed a new literary genre in order to meet the changing needs of eastern communities. He traces the contours of Karaite biblical exegesis as it developed in the Islamic east during the tenth century, taking a thematic approach rather than attempting a comprehensive study of the major exegetes and their commentaries.
