Franke (comparative literature, Italian and religious studies, Vanderbilt University) draws on all his areas of expertise in this journey through the Christian apocalyptic tradition in poetry. He discusses seminal work by Dante, Milton and Blake, but his main interest is Joyce's Finnegans Wake which he sees as a reordering of language to express revelatory beliefs leading to an apocalyptic "negative theology". He extends this to all poetry as being an attempt to express something beyond words. Franke places this firmly in the tradition of early Christian philosophers, the book of Revelation and as analogous to the mystical writings of Rumi and the Kabbalists. His own writing is an intriguing blend of literary criticism and mysticism as if, through this study, Franke is seeking his own revelation at the end of words.
