Fredericks (York College) presents a collection of 20 tales in readers theater format, specially selected to integrate with US history and language arts curricula in elementary and middle schools. The collection includes versions of the stories of Casey Jones, Brer Rabbit, Rip Van Winkle, and Johnny Appleseed. The myths of Native American people are also represented, and there is also a chapter devoted to ballads and songs. Tips for introducing and using readers theater are included, along with material on current research to use when building a case for its use to administrators, parents, and community members. A chart relates the 12 IRA/NCTE Standards for the English Language Arts to the ways in which readers theater supports the standards. The author has written 70 teacher resource books, as well as many children's books. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
