This work for students and practitioners offers a detailed survey of the field of transpersonal psychology. The book’s 50 contributors in psychology, sociology, therapy, and social justice represent institutions including Sofia University, the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology, the California Institute of Integral Studies, Saybrook University, the International Transpersonal Association, the William James Center for Consciousness Studies, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Naropa Institute. In Part 1, four chapters introduce the definition and roots of transpersonal psychology and address criticisms. Later sections present work on theory, research methodologies, and transpersonal experiences and altered states of consciousness, such as psychedelic experiences, exceptional human experiences (EHE), near death experiences, and transpersonal sexual experiences. There is also a section on transpersonal approaches to healing and wellness, such as meditation and creative arts therapy. The final section examines feminist perspectives and the emergence of transpersonal social engagement. This second edition contains new material on recent research in neurobiology and consciousness, plus updated results on therapies with hallucinogens.
