This volume explains network-centric warfare through its use by the US Navy and other navies in specific historical situations from before World War I through the 1970s. Using these tactical examples, it demonstrates applications using radio, radar, and computers, what network-centric warfare can and cannot do, what it needs to work, and its limitations and measures to overcome them. The book is partly based on a net assessment study Friedman participated in at the Naval War College. Friedman, a defense analyst and historian specializing in technology and national strategy, is a lecturer and author, and has been a personal consultant to the Secretary of the Navy.
