Fruchtman traces and elaborates on the development of the political thought of Thomas Paine, the American revolutionary pamphleteer best known for Common Sense and The Rights of Man. He identifies seven key themes in Paine's thought: faith in God as a benevolent deity who has given human beings the task of improving the world; detestation of rank, privilege, and corruption; belief in a constitutionally-governed democratic republic with frequent elections and equal suffrage to all white males over twenty-one, regardless of property holdings; trust in the public-spiritedness of politically involved citizens; faith in a strong commercial republic, governed by a Hamiltonian spirit, but with concern for the poor, the elderly, and children; belief in the republic's international commercial relationships founded on a strong navy, a fair system of taxation, and a just banking system open to all; and a faith in the efficacy of revolution that developed after his imprisonment into a belief in reform through civic engagement and public spiritedness.
