Furusawa (applied physics, U. of Tokyo) and Loock (optic theory, U. Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany) offer a fairly general introduction to two complementary approaches to quantum information processing: those based on discrete-variable "qubit" systems; and those utilizing quantum oscillator systems, or "qumodes," most naturally represented by continuous quantum variables such as amplitude and phase. The first part is pretty theoretical, introducing the basics of quantum information processing and its optical implementation. More practical matters are handled in the other two sections, on fundamental resources and protocols, and measurement-based and hybrid approaches. Among topics there are entanglement, quantum error correction, the quantum teleportation of gates, and cluster-based quantum information processing. Graduate and research physicists might find the treatment useful. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
